American Veteran Research Project
You will research an American veteran and write a one to two paragraph paper. Your paper should include:
1. A picture of the person (cited correctly)
2. A topic sentence
3. The person’s full name, hometown, and date of birth (also include the date of death if the person has died)
4. What branch of service he/she was in (Army, Navy, etc) and the dates he/she served.
5. Any military awards this person received
6. Anything else this person is known for
7. Correct MLA style for the source used

Goodbye to A.R.
Due to budget cuts, our school will no longer be participating in the Accelerated Reader Program. Although your child will no longer take AR or STAR tests, he/she will still have specific reading goals. Without AR, students will have more flexibility to read books that interest them. The Media Center will also continue to label books by Lexile levels, to assist students with checking out books. Please continue to make sure your child reads at home each night for 30 minutes. As we begin to phase out of AR, your child will have the following goals for this marking period:
1. Read a biography or autobiography and take an AR test by Nov. 23 (this will be the last AR test for the year!)
2. Create a book talk on a fictional book by Dec. 16
3. Create a cereal box on a fictional book by Jan. 18
Detailed directions on book talks and cereal boxes will be sent home at a later date. As a reminder, students with internet access at home are also encouraged to log on to Teen Biz from the school website to read nonfiction passages and complete activities to improve their reading skills.

Parents, Bulldog Grades are up an running! This online system allows parents and students to check grades from any computer. To get started, simply:
1. Go to www.carteretcountyschools.org/bcms and click on Bulldog Grades
2. Select "Parents Click Here" and then "Click Here to Register"
3. Type in your name, email, password
4. Add your student (use the school login which is 18 first initial and last name and their 4 digit password, which should be written in at the front of your child's agenda)
